Mercyful is a first-person horror game of bluffing and nerve, played across a table in a house that always collects.

• How a table works

  The loader seals their rack and chambers one shell in secret. The other side decides: accept it, or send it back. Whoever ends up facing the barrel takes what was loaded. A live shell leaves a wound. A blank grants Mercy.

  Then the roles turn. Wounds end a life. Mercy buys a way out. Either verdict ends the table.

• Nine Confessors

  Nine opponents keep the house, from Robert at the first table to Morgan at the last. Each brings their own tools and one habit they cannot break. Lose, and you face them again. Learn the habit, and the rematch is yours.

  Some tables run short. Some run long. Later tables deal gilded shells that pay double and rusted ones that refuse to kill.

• Tools of the trade

  Beat Samuel, the third opponent, and the house hands you a case. Pack it at the bathroom bench before each table. A magnifier reveals the offer. An inverter flips it unseen. A handsaw makes a live shell cut twice. Scripture, a rosary, a palmed pair and more wait on the bouncer's television: eleven tools in all.

• A house you can touch

  You wake on bathroom tiles. Drag to look. Every control is an object: a wall television, a locker of keepsakes, a rusted barrel that holds your Scrip, a jukebox wired into the club. Load a record and the whole dance floor moves to it on your walk to the table.

• Earn it at the table

  Win tables to earn Scrip. Spend it on tools, records, keepsakes for the table and the gun, and new frames and gold finishes from the armoury. Clear the house, then begin again. Prestige hardens every Confessor, and on the third lap the habits you memorized turn inside out.

• Take a seat online

  Switch on the bathroom television and choose FIND A TABLE. Quick Play needs no account and never touches your rating. Ranked climbs from Bronze to Master and needs a free Layton Account, which also syncs your progress across devices. If no one is waiting, a computer opponent takes the seat.

• Good to know

  Seventeen Game Center achievements mark the long way through. The campaign plays offline. Online play and account features need an internet connection. No ads. No in-app purchases.
